About Us

poplar treeSince 1841, F.D. Sterritt Lumber Company has been serving the building materials industry the right way.  As times have progressed, and technology has drastically changed the way we harvest building materials, F.D. Sterritt Lumber felt the need to adapt as well.  Out of our deep respect for the environment, Sterritt Lumber started stocking FSC®-certified lumber in 2002, after CEO Jack Mackin saw a growing trend involving sustainability.  We found solace in the fact that the certification comes from an independent, non-governmental, not for profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.  Through our commitment to the FSC, we keep over $1,000,000 worth of FSC certified lumber on the ground at all times.  It is an incredibly encouraging time, as industry leaders are sourcing and supplying more certified wood by the day, thanks to LEED® continuing to be one of the largest driver of FSC wood products.

More About Sterritt’s Association With The Forest Stewardship Council

Autumn maple treeTen years ago, Sterritt Lumber embarked on its newest venture: green building. We became FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) chain of custody certified to distribute, remanufacture, pressure and fire treat FSC certified wood products. Sterritt has gained many accolades for this distinction including being named “Best of Boston” for 2009 by the Best of Boston Home Magazine for the Best Eco-Friendly Flooring Category.  The professionals at Sterritt are determined to be a continued industry leader in preserving our environment.  Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests.  FSC sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way.  Landowners and companies that sell timber or forest products seek certification as a way to verify to consumers that they have practiced forestry consistent with FSC standards.  Independent, certification organizations are accredited by FSC to carry out assessments of forest management to determine if standards have been met.  These certifiers also verify that companies claiming to sell FSC certified products have tracked their supply back to FSC certified sources.  This chain of custody certification assures that consumers can trust the FSC label.  Sterritt Lumber is a certified chain of custody supplier, distributor, and remanufacturer of FSC wood products. Here is a summary of some of the points the FCS requires in its full chain of custody.  Many of the points listed below will appear almost basic – but in many places even these basic requirements are not fulfilled.  This is where the FSC and by association, Sterritt Lumber can have the biggest positive impact on our environment.  We pledge that the following tenets have been upheld during the harvesting and supplying of our FSC certified products:

  • The conversion of natural forests and habitats has been prohibited.
  • Respecting international workers’ rights has been a priority.
  • The use of hazardous chemicals has not been allowed.
  • There have been no human rights violations.
  • All local applicable laws have been followed.
  • The Identification and appropriate management of forests has been a high priority.
  • No animals have been harmed or endangered.
